The Federal Defense Force of the Territories (FDFT) is one of the defense components of the United States of Quentin, focusing on first response defense and civilian order in the federal territories of the country, currently Berlinsavis, JP Island, the Kade Islands, and the Quentinian Raven Islands. The Quentinian FDFT serves under the Department of Defense, however is not considered an armed service branch under Quentinian law, instead being considered as a federal law enforcement agency. The FDFT has components for each of the federal territories of the nation, commanded by the Territorial Governors or each territory, though the Supreme Commander also has command in certain situations, including war and rebellion.
The majority of FDFT soldiers, airmen, and sailors serve part-time, and have other jobs while serving in the FDFT. The FDFT has components of air, land, and sea, however these components are organized on the territorial level, as the FDFT does not have organizations at the higher level which command land, sea, or air exclusively on the territorial level.
The FDFT was created in 1924, by the Executive Order for the Defense of Federal Property which was enacted by President Jackson Shield. The order came before the beginning of the Greater Venturian War, and the FDFT was created immediately after under the Department of Defense. Post-war, the validity of the FDFT came into question by the Supreme Council, and in the Supreme Council decision Supreme Court Proclamation on the Federal Defense Force of 1946, Supreme Decider Ragy Ebeid declared the executive order unable to create a new force with military powers, and declared the order null and void under the Constitution. In 1951, Congress passed the 18th Amendment, which reestablished the FDFT, and was approved by the Supreme Council that same year.
Subsequent acts of Congress, including the Federal Defense Force Centralization Act and the Unified Defense Acts, gave the Supreme Commander special command over the FDFT in circumstances of war or mass rebellion, and established procedure for the FDFT to be integrated into the armed forces during wartime and, to an extent, during peacetime. The FDFT is similar to the National Guard of other federations around the world, however due to the longstanding tradition in Quentinian government that the federal government is supreme, the states have never been given their own militias or guard forces, just federal territories.
